Shavuot with the Warmth of Care
For Shavuot, volunteers prepared festive packages for older, isolated and less mobile community members
Shavuot is a holiday meant to be shared with others. And it is especially important that those who need attention, support and simple human connection most can feel the warmth of the holiday.
As part of the Food Security project, our volunteers prepared festive Shavuot packages for older, isolated and less mobile members of the Jewish community. Twelve volunteers joined this good cause, baking homemade cookies in the shape of the letter "Aleph."
This symbol was chosen for a reason. "Aleph" is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet and is associated with beginnings, unity and passing traditions from generation to generation. Each cookie became a small but warm symbol of the holiday.
While some volunteers worked in the kitchen, others set out to deliver the festive packages to people's homes. For some, it was simply a package of homemade treats, while for others, it was a long-awaited sign that they are remembered and that there are people nearby who care.
After all, care does not always require grand gestures. Sometimes it is enough to make something by hand, pay someone a visit, bring a gift and wish them a happy holiday. It is these simple, sincere acts that create a true sense of community.
May Shavuot bring light, warmth and joy to every home. And may the kindness we share with one another return through new gatherings, smiles and the desire to do even more.
