Warmth with your own hands

Participants of the "Haverim" program gathered once again, not only to have an enjoyable time but also to create something special

This time, volunteers prepared a candle-making workshop using beeswax for elderly people. The session combined tradition, health benefits, and an opportunity for social interaction.

The workshop began with a brief introduction to beeswax—a natural material used since ancient times. Volunteers explained how to properly work with these sheets to create beautiful, even candles. For the elderly participants, this was a revelation: they learned that beeswax candles not only burn longer than regular paraffin ones, but also fill the room with a pleasant honey aroma, creating a cozy atmosphere.

But this process wasn't just about beauty and aesthetics. Working with beeswax positively impacts fine motor skills, which is especially important for older adults. By rolling the sheets, smoothing them, and shaping the candles, participants exercised their fingers, improved coordination, and even massaged active points on their palms. Volunteers mentioned that such exercises help maintain joint flexibility, reduce stress, and improve mood.

The most delightful moment was the shared conversation. As they worked, participants recalled family traditions, shared memories of candles they lit in childhood, and told fascinating stories about festive evenings in their families. Volunteers listened to their stories, asked questions, and then spoke about contemporary traditions that continue Jewish culture.

These workshops are not just creative activities; they are another step toward uniting generations, an opportunity to show care, share knowledge, and simply spend time in the company of like-minded individuals. Volunteers noted that these meetings are always filled with warmth, just like the candles they create together. And they are already planning the next workshops, which will help preserve traditions and bring joy to each participant.
