Project "Last Address" in Sumy

Installation of memorial plaques on houses in Sumy indicating the places of residence of victims of political repression

Project "Last Address"

Preserving historical memory is an important condition for preventing the repetition of terrible and destructive events that could negatively affect our common future. In this regard, the project "Last Address" in Sumy performs valuable work aimed at maintaining the memory of victims of political repression in Ukraine during the period of repression and the Great Terror (1937-1938), which claimed the lives of 254 out of 593 people subjected to repression. The project is intended for residents of Sumy interested in history, as well as for students and historians.

Project Description:

Within the framework of the project, participants are engaged in installing memorial plaques on the facades of buildings where the victims of repression lived until their arrest. The events are held 1-2 times a month.

Project Goals:

The project aims to preserve the historical memory of those who suffered from repression and is intended to maintain public condemnation of arbitrariness and lawlessness that became part of our common history. Awareness of lawlessness is a reliable vaccine against such events in the future.

Role of Volunteers:

The project "Last Address" is organized with the support of volunteers, whose efforts are aimed at searching for necessary information in archives, preparing memorial plaques, organizing events, and posting information about them on social networks.

Project Results:

Thanks to the project, a large number of residents of Sumy become acquainted with the history of those who lived in the city during the times of repression. Social networks are used to increase public awareness of historical events and those who perished during the Great Terror period. In addition, residents of Sumy get the opportunity to better know their hometown.
