Project "Matzeva"

The project aims to preserve the memory of the Jewish people through research, improvement, and restoration of historical sites.

The "Matzeva" project is dedicated to preserving and maintaining significant places (particularly Jewish cemeteries) to pass on historical memory to future generations and maintain Jewish identity.

Project Description:

Within the project's framework, systematic work is carried out on cleaning and landscaping mass burial sites and historically important places in Chernihiv region, as well as conducting research activities aimed at preserving the historical memory of the Jewish people. Participants install memorial signs, learn about Jewish funeral traditions and tombstone symbolism to gain a deeper understanding of the cultural aspects related to burial and memory preservation.

Project Goals:

  • Preserve the historical memory of the Jewish people
  • Improve and maintain historically significant sites and necropolises
  • Pass on and preserve Jewish funeral traditions
  • Strengthen community ties

Role of Volunteers:

  • Participate in research activities
  • Clean and improve mass burial sites and historically significant places
  • Study Jewish funeral symbolism and traditions
  • Conduct tours and educational events

Expected Project Results:

  • Preservation and restoration of historically significant sites, including Jewish necropolises in Chernihiv region
  • Increased awareness and respect for cultural heritage
  • Strengthened intergenerational connections
  • Creation of a sustainable platform for further research and preservation of historical memory
